web mashup is a new type of web applications that uses data and services from one or more external sources (usually from the Internet) to build entirely new and different web applications. Wikipedia defines a mashup as a web application hybrid. While most prominent web mashups use publicly available APIs like Google Maps, Amazon ECS, and more, this is not the only way to do mashups. Significant innovations can be achieved with further aggregation and hybridization of code and data from publicly available APIs, with private data as well as private applications.

The idea behind web mashups is creativity and innovation in new data and services, not just aggregation of existing ones, which most of the older technologies focus on. Wikipedia provides further comparison of portals, mashups and portals that are all content aggregations technology, web mashups differ because portals aggregate and display content and applications in discrete packages, whereas mashups integrate the data and services together and serve them out as a single application. Mashupshub site explained further that the different seems to be organization, with portal more centrally designed, and each portlet with some specific intention of being aggregated into one or more portal screens. An example of this is that while a portal will happily display a map of your current location, your address book, and today’s astrology readings in 3 different portlet windows, a mashup will display the astrology readings of 10 of your friends who are closest to you, in an online map occupying the whole browser space.

WikiHow and the book I read pretty much explain how to create mashups. You have to have subject, know where the data is coming from, and how much coding you know. Mashups do not require you to be very knowledgeable in technical programming, however, it will help to have a basic familiarity with common web development languages and techniques like HTML/XHTML, CSS and JavaScript. Better than that, there are mashup editors online and some of them are free which allows you to create and edit mashups. Like Yahoo pipes, Google mashup editor, IBM Mashup Center, JackBe, JDA Composer, Microsoft Popfly, Mozila Ubiquity, and more. In Yahoo Pipes you could create different applications, combine many feeds into one, geocide your favorite feed and browse the items on an interactive map, grab the output of any pipes as RSS, or other format. Or probably you could take data from Flickr, the photo storage and sharing and mash it up with Google maps, the online mapping application to display photos that come from a particular geographical area. I never did though, however, I believe this is could be done. Alex Iskold in the Read Write Web blog wrote that “Yahoo! Pipes is a remarkable offering. It is the first GUI builder for the biggest database in the world, the Web itself.”

That sounds exciting, now I get to think, if this will affect me as I hope to be an interactive designer? The open source software is for me as a designer, is my creation that just allows and program to be used with the software to mix and match but still the software is mine. For example, with Firefox as open source software, others create widgets which still are not completely owned by Firefox, however, Firefox still owns the original program. It may mean less money, however, it will be rewarding in another way. Like you could have name recognition, not to mention learning from others; and, perhaps more traffic. With this could lead to the marketing aspect, where more traffic, invitations for other jobs, and, more money in terms of the advertising and fame. The bottom line that as an interaction designer, we need to learn that the fact of what is yours is not necessarily yours, parts of it belong to the community, and you get to enjoy the fame. I believe money will come in other ways. The fact that you do what makes you happy, while in the process getting the opportunity to earn money and fame makes the effort worth while.

That’s the reason I am going back to school again. I took some online a while ago using simple HTML. It worked in the class, but then when I agree to working on a community project, turned out that I have no clue about it at all. I guest you could say the same about xhtml. In most articles and sites I read that convinces that XHTML really only offers two major advantages — to a document author — which aren’t available in HTML: the ability to mix in content from other markup languages more or less seamlessly (via XMLnamespaces), and the ability to use standard XML tools to work with your documents. Anne’s websblog stated that Xhtml is more suitable for the web. In the Anne’s weblogs also mentioned that what is most clear to most people that HTML consisted “of superfluous TABLE and FONT elements and that for XHTML you needed to use CSS which can be cached and therefore saves bandwidth”. However, the articles at Lachy’s web blog stated that XHTML is not for beginner. I kind of agree with that, for being very little understand what is HTML, XHTML is a blank canvas for me. There is blog by Robert Nyman offers good articles regarding this subject which sugested that choosing HTML or XHTML is depending what you needs and what you want to accomplish. I think I won’t fully understand until I am really is trying to understands both HTML and XHTML and fully put them into practice.

As for CSS, as what I found in my reading is, I understand that CSS gives more control over the appearance of a Web page to the page creator than to the browser designer or the viewer. Basicly this is the advance of HTML which have advntage like: Separation of content ,design and efficient control over large document sets, and CSS supports more formatting option than plain HTML tags. The most powerful implementaions of CSS will allow site designers to control the graphics and of thousands of pages by modifying a single master style sheet document. I think when I relate to this I have to say just like you have a master page in layout program like adobe in design or Quark X-press.

Million of internet users around the globe are finding a new, fun, interesting, entertaining, englightening, and informative content too attract visitor in their sites.

Because of first impression count and people only remember about 10% of what they hear, but they remember 50 – 70% of what they hear. With an audio file, you can be sure that more of your visitors will remember the message presented in the site. Once your visitors hear your voice, they know that there is a real human being behind the website. This goes a long way towards establishing trust and credibility.

According to the Information week, the number of podcast users in the United States alone is expected to increase around 60 million by 2010. The largest number of podcast are driven by a private users which mostly use for music download. This tool definitely valuable.

My daugther assigned a poem for the holiday play, and her teacher record the poem in audio files, than encourage the parent use the childred listen the ipod while memorize the poem. Of course, my daughter exciting because this is the first time that she will be able using the ipod for school purpose. Education week reported that educator are starting to see how podcasting can help students’ vocabulary, writing, editing, public speaking, and presentation skills. Wesley A. Fryer in his article also reported that podcast as one of technology for the classroom in the 21st century education program. He also listed the benefits of podcasting in the classroom . I had a lecture from the organization I belong to, podcast their announcement and lectures to allow its members who are traveling, members who are ill, members who live at a distance who can’t participate phisically. However in my observation, there are some educators and parents who are not agree to involving a technology as one of the classroom tools. If you ask me about my opinion for daughter education tools, I supporting any tools which is work, and avalable for her.

I used internet in most of what I do, and these day with busy schedule I have as most people are, I always look out the new tools and methods how to get my information quick, save times and accurate. As most internet users experienced, finding, organizing, and cosuming information on the web could be very frustrating. I get my ideas from how to be creative to pack my daughter school lunch everyday, to keep up with what I do and whats happens out there, has proven to be a time consuming and inefficient because of massive information resources on web. You typed something in google or other search engine, wow…you get hundreds or even thousands result. The web contain massive information resources you seeking, if only you could find it. The practice of collecting information from the web which is done in efficient manner is called information trapping.

Tara Calishain is the creator of ResearchBuzz, define this practice of information trapping by subscribbing to rss feeds, setting up google alerts and similar services to bring updated contents to you as it’s generated. In her ResearchBuzz site, she went further to explained the three tools to trap the information you are seeking, as mentioned above including a web page monitor/watcher, and text editor such as Ultra Edit, or Notelight. She also mentioned another RSS feed site call FaveBot. This is will make my internet life even easier. However, one need to remember just like any other PLE tools, we need to know how it work and how we like it. Is it what we looking for and suit with our needs ? As well as like most people assume that the more information you have about something, the better you understand it. Up to a point, that’s usually true. Everything need check in ballance. Just like that you can’t just watch FOX News all the time, you need to watch CNN to understand the different.

Sarah Milstein in her online article published by New York Times, explained that how twitter can help at work. Before that I came accross blog: Social Media Watch, describe how twitter work for you. In this blog, Baby Jane pointed out that twitter not only social networking but also, will give you benefits, from looking and searching jobs, locate for new opportunities, improve your business, and even advertise your business. Anne Jackson, TN, in her blog posted how twitter safe lives. Not to mention the article in education week which describe how twitter help educators and is one of the gadget choice to teach student to networking, cross-curricula tools, and potentially safe tools to use. The only way to proof that and know about it, I need to just start jump in and use twitter, of course before that I need to figure it out.

Keeping up with this week class topic on “Collective Intelligence” as what panel discussion by MIT World, the first thing came to mind is the Obama’s 2008 Presidential Election. Thomas Malone in MIT International Conference, April 27-29,2009, defined collective intelligence as “groups of individuals acting collectively in ways that seem intelligent,” and he went on mentioned that “all families, tribes, teams, and governments, for example, act with some degree of collective intelligence”. In Obama’s campaign he used collaborative and collective efforts within families, communities, religious groups, different ages groups, and institutions. Obama open up government decision-making and involve the public in the work of agencies, not simply by soliciting opinions, but by tapping into the vast and distributed expertise within American citizenry to help government make more informed decisions. Obama’s innovation and tech agenda is new kind of surge of social creativity and collective intelligence to solve problem face America together. This is inline what Tom Atlee and George Por definition of Collective Intelligence, ” Collective intelligence is any intelligence that arises from–or is a capacity or characteristic of–groups and other collective living systems”. obama campaign expanded perspective and motivate not only African American and the American youth, but it all nation.

According to Wikipedia, “Collective intelligence (CI) can also be defined as a form of networking enabled by the rise of communications technology, namely the Internet”. Well, again using Obama’s campaign, Obama use new media tools, particularly social media and online video publishing for grassroots campaigning, campaign financing and connecting with constituencies.

This campaign to me is clear success of understanding the uses of Collective Intelligence by adopting what we are calling a collaborative approach not only in traditional campaign but in technologies and new media, embracing audience participation, and mobilizing fans as grassroots advocates.

At least that the way I understand how to use Collective Intelligence. I am sure others relate to different events and examples. Since I am living in today society which I witness the history of American presidential election, from now on I completely believe than anything is possible in America.

I understand that Community of Practices as Etienne Wenger point it out in his paper is informal, self-organized, network of peers with diverse skills and experience in the same area of interest or prefessions. Such group ussually held together by the members’ common desire to help other (by sharing information) and the need to advance their own knowledge (by learning to others). He also noted that by definition is not always or assume that the group is merely for learning is the reason the community comes together to interact with each other. Sure I experiences Community Services in numbers times in my life times, even though now I am belongs to more than one. However, what I knew about when the term of community services is the services or the group which are community or neighborhood based organizations which the members are lives closed by which each member service must be volunteer with no monetary value may be received or due. The professional group I belong to which categories as community services often not call community services but it something else, such as: AIGA. The members of the AIGA are not reside close each other even though you could found local chapter in each city.

Thomas Stewart, in his article “The Invisible Keys to Success” published by Fortune Magazine (August 6,1996) noted that “Community of Practices/Interest” are the shop floor of human capital where the stuff and ideas inspired and made it happens. I agree with this. The rules in the workforce, inside the company, are mostly is not open, and less freedom to express and try new ideas. This is because within company itself most the times can’t afford to be failed. However, the Community Services is place where people get together sharing rather than compete without affraid to be failed or lost their revenue. For example again in AIGA, there is conversation social which imply to certain experience, knowledge or even failure withing mem bers, however, at work, each worker concealed what they know. They don’t want others to know because one want to be the only one or more advance than anybody else withing the company. Most in individuals in organizations or companies both want to make a different and to be good at their jobs while striving to keep personal control over their lives and futures.

Charles Handy, in his book Beyond Certainty: The Changing Worlds of Organisations, Harvard Business School Press, 1996), describe the most companies or organizations, especially those heavily dependent on professionals, ignore informal networks in frequent reorganizations and promotions at their perils. He also mentioned that most corporate leaders fall into the instrumental fallacy instrumental fallacy - the danger of treating people as instruments, as well-behaved tools for the organization’s purpose. They forget that these individual is human the one which the future of the organizations depends on their contributions. Its funny when you work with companies that always, said this company is yours , so you need to care about the future of the companies, but their leader differs with what they said instead treating the employee like an object rather likes members. This problem also heavily rooted in the Faith Based Community Services which they are form to help community while they are comes from different background, or in my religious community, most of them are have different level of faith. The knowledgeable people don’t have intention educate the ignorant or members who have less knowledge in their faith, rather told them this is what should be done. The other way around that the ignorant or less knowledgeable feel offended instead willingness to learn more. However, faith and values can be a source of strength within organizations which allows them to learn and understand each member which eventual develop respect withing each other. Don’t you agree with our work a lot more easier when we understand and respect our colleagues.

Jeremiah Owyang in his blog stated that the communities is powerful tool as long as you put members needs first. He further the online community is an interactive group of people with common interest which could united the community around the world with the most powerful tools. This one already proofed by Senator Obama, “Fundraising in Internet”, and he is succesfully raised that money. I do too go forward with this and would like very much learn further how to establish good community practices. I always believe that:

The use of a technology to support the construction of communal ways of seeing, acting and knowing which allows the community to communicate and reconstruct a shared experience continually in order to produce greater meaning and greater potential for successful in the future, collaborated to generate a common, shared understanding of events and an action orientation for dealing with such events the next time they arise.

A collaborative technology is a tool that enables individuals to jointly engage in active production of shared knowledge.

For example, a storyboard is a tool that can enable script writers, set designers, and directors to construct a shared understanding of the film they aim to produce. Shared practices of collaborative technology use builds communal understandings.

By publicly acting on a problematic situation with a collaborative technology, a community collectively reconstructs its experience; this necessarily involves gesturing, pointing to, talking about, and in general juxtaposing the technology and the problematic situation.”

What Community Services do you involve ?

No doubt about it that being Professional Blogger is not easy. Most of the resources I found sugested that most of the suggestion becoming successful blogger, first are planning and purpose of the blog. Stephen Downes, in his article “How to be Heard”, sugested to write and choose the content which is in the trend and demand out there; Something that they don’t have interest in it, even though at the end of the writing content topic he encourage to study of yourself and things you thinking about the most. However other sugests to write what you know and good at it, topic which interest you the most. I agree with this, writing the stuff you knows. Because to be blogger, in my understanding is to express, your opinion, the fact that you know, and to educate others about particular things you know. After go on talk about Butterfly media, stated that “A powerful blog does not report facts”, I thought people out there wants to know the true, therefore, why avoid facts. Though, I like their suggestion that good blogger is to be involve and active in others blogger activity, especially in area that have interest in it. I ‘ve been taught that the content and good articles is everything in the writing world, however as David Peralty and John Chow pointed it out, that good articles is not the key, instead the good promotion for the blog itself follows with the proper context of the most current article on given topics. Stephen Downes also touch about design, and I agree with him that the quality of the design and layout is count. I am trained and educate as a graphic designer, however, there are alot of people out there just because they know photoshop and microsoft publisher, claimed themselve to be a graphic designer. However, as the article on master media point it out that you could tell if the designer or template quality by the layout of their site, easy to navigate and to read, load easily, have their own identity and unique, and well organize. The rest of the criteria which are very important according to my research are consistent, learn from others, begins tagging your images, responds to your comments and emails, link to others post and exchange with other blogger in your field, submit your blog to search engines, use traffic exchanges, get plugin for the social bookmarking sites, and I am sure other tips out there.

Finally, in my understanding it needs to be clean and clear in its content representation with every element closely tied in with theme and content including design, ads, blogrollsm graphics, pictures, titles, headings, and words. More importantly, it needs to send a clear message of its purpose and goals.

Wow, that’s plenty. What do you think? Do you have other tips ? Any advise and sugestions are gladly accepted since I am very beginner in the blogging arena.

It supposed to be useful. I didn’t know much about it. Before I research about the subject, I thought it was somekind of program to create solely for website; I had no clue what is for and how to use it.

ProBlogger site done very good to explain this RSS (Rich Site Summary). It explained that RSS is technology that used by most of web users today to keep track of their favorites sites, which is before had to bookmark websites in their browser and manually return to see what is been updates. So, RSS according to this blog provides easier methods to get up to date with your favorite website. Instead you searching what new out there, with RSS technology, collected the update information for you.

Well I need to start to try this tools. Probably is not just me who has long lists of different sites in the browser’s favorite. For some reason I have two browser in my computer. If it happened I use internet explore, and I need to open a certain website in my favorite, I have to get out and change the browser. Or I have to searh the site again.

I used to subcribed a notification from certain website to be notify every time update information available. But than I am starting have to deal with spam. With RSS it will eliminate this.

I guest this tools will help me to save my time and definitely easier. I could bookmark different sites I need for different purpose. Like my news, my research and articles for my own leisure, or even for my continous learning and education. Yet in my learning process, RSS benefit me tremendously. It allows me to quickly scan headlines (titles) and read articles related with my studying. Because the information is condensed and provided in a single location users can generally review more information in a shorter time frame.

Its means:

I could easily locate information, read condesed information wit clearly marked and dated topic article,

I could classify and categorize articles in related topic in an easy to navigate manner,

yet It will maximize my time without worry about spam from the email new article notification
