To be Professional Blogger

Posted in IMD Fundamentals with tags , on October 26, 2008 by sagustine

No doubt about it that being Professional Blogger is not easy. Most of the resources I found sugested that most of the suggestion becoming successful blogger, first are planning and purpose of the blog. Stephen Downes, in his article “How to be Heard”, sugested to write and choose the content which is in the trend and demand out there; Something that they don’t have interest in it, even though at the end of the writing content topic he encourage to study of yourself and things you thinking about the most. However other sugests to write what you know and good at it, topic which interest you the most. I agree with this, writing the stuff you knows. Because to be blogger, in my understanding is to express, your opinion, the fact that you know, and to educate others about particular things you know. After go on talk about Butterfly media, stated that “A powerful blog does not report facts”, I thought people out there wants to know the true, therefore, why avoid facts. Though, I like their suggestion that good blogger is to be involve and active in others blogger activity, especially in area that have interest in it. I ‘ve been taught that the content and good articles is everything in the writing world, however as David Peralty and John Chow pointed it out, that good articles is not the key, instead the good promotion for the blog itself follows with the proper context of the most current article on given topics. Stephen Downes also touch about design, and I agree with him that the quality of the design and layout is count. I am trained and educate as a graphic designer, however, there are alot of people out there just because they know photoshop and microsoft publisher, claimed themselve to be a graphic designer. However, as the article on master media point it out that you could tell if the designer or template quality by the layout of their site, easy to navigate and to read, load easily, have their own identity and unique, and well organize. The rest of the criteria which are very important according to my research are consistent, learn from others, begins tagging your images, responds to your comments and emails, link to others post and exchange with other blogger in your field, submit your blog to search engines, use traffic exchanges, get plugin for the social bookmarking sites, and I am sure other tips out there.

Finally, in my understanding it needs to be clean and clear in its content representation with every element closely tied in with theme and content including design, ads, blogrollsm graphics, pictures, titles, headings, and words. More importantly, it needs to send a clear message of its purpose and goals.

Wow, that’s plenty. What do you think? Do you have other tips ? Any advise and sugestions are gladly accepted since I am very beginner in the blogging arena.

RSS (Rich Site Summary)

Posted in IMD Fundamentals with tags , on October 19, 2008 by sagustine

What is RSS and what it does?  This one tough. I supposed that I heard it before but I have no clue.

It supposed to be useful.  I didn’t know much about it. Before I research about the subject, I thought it was somekind of program to create solely for website; I had no clue what is for and how to use it.

ProBlogger site done very good to explain this RSS (Rich Site Summary).  It explained that RSS is technology that used by most of web users today to keep track of their favorites sites, which is before had to bookmark websites in their browser and manually return to see what is been updates. So, RSS according to this blog provides easier methods to get up to date with your favorite website. Instead you searching what new out there, with RSS technology, collected the update information for you.

Well I need to start to try this tools. Probably is not just me who has long lists of different sites in the browser’s favorite.  For some reason I have two browser in my computer.  If it happened I use internet explore, and I need to open a certain website in my favorite, I have to get out and change the browser. Or  I have to searh the site again.

I used to subcribed a notification from certain website to be notify every time update information available. But than I am starting have to deal with spam.  With RSS it will eliminate this.

I guest this tools will help me to save my time and definitely easier.  I could bookmark different sites I need for different purpose.  Like my news, my research and articles for my own leisure, or even for my continous learning and education. Yet in my learning process, RSS benefit me tremendously. It allows me to quickly scan headlines (titles) and read articles related with my studying. Because the information is condensed and provided in a single location users can generally review more information in a shorter time frame.

Its means:

  • I could easily locate information, read condesed information wit clearly marked and dated topic article,
  • I could classify and categorize articles in related topic in an easy to navigate manner,
  • yet It will maximize my time without worry about spam from the email new article notification

Personal Learning Environment

Posted in IMD Fundamentals on October 9, 2008 by sagustine

Okay. Personal Learning Environment (PLE), to me is based on individual basis which of course depends on what individual needs and his/her environment surrounding. Its lies within the ability of each individual to go beyond what they can and able to.

After I searched little deeper, I’ve been fascinated by the concept of PLE. According to Ron Lubensky who has written a summary of PLE that: a Personal Learning Environment is a facility for an individual to access, aggregate, configure and manipulate digital artifacts of their ongoing learning experiences.

Wow, its mean that the learning this day is affected and depends on how we as individual know how to use digital resources despite how smart we are.

According to Zina that PLE is a concept of virtual learning environment systems that help learners take control of and manage their own learning. Surprisingly enough this concept appear the same time just as web 2.0 known in the world wide web (at least according to me).

Graham Attwell in his paper conclude that we can’t simply using the traditional form of learning in the classroom and university instead we have to looks another methods of learning which is inline with emerging and fast changing technology. It is mean that PLE is new approach inline with new technologyies for learning which provide the student their own spaces under their control, to develope, share, and colaborate with others to solve problem, and increase their knowledge. So theres is obvious that PLE is a bridge between the wall inside the institution and outside world. Its means that with PLE student can develop the judgements and skills or literacy necessary for using new technologies in a rapidly changing society.

Again, the function of web 2.0 and blogging are serve the needs of PLE. With the place like Facebooks, Myspace, Podcast, and others are definitely keep us top of the things we want to know, as long as we know how to access and use it. lol.

Web 2.0 in Education

Posted in IMD Fundamentals, Uncategorized on October 9, 2008 by sagustine

What is actually Web 2.0 is? Well I heard about it but I was’n sure what it is. I thought it was another version of operating system to use to create a website. I am close, I am almost got it right.

What my understand from my first day of IMD Fundamentals class about this Web 2.0 is the next generation of technology tools and solutions where interactive content is the norm. It’s mean this is different meaning for every organizations or individual based on what their purpose, who their audience and what they want to accomplish.

According to Alexandra Krasne that Web 2.0 is an important tools for non-profit organization. It can help them be heard, and allows the non-profit supporters to build movements for social, environmental, economic, and political change.

Derek’s Blog have the same concern of my own concern about teacher and education in general. This Web 2.0 tools could be one of the solutions to increase the quality of education. It could help the teacher to connect with others educator to social networking, share teaching tips or other skills, resources, or just chat to relieve each other loads. For Students, this is the perfect media. Most kids like internet and other interactive media. I know my daughter more exciting study through the computer and other interactive media, and I am sure other children/students out there, which almost all of them are growing up on the web, are exciting and less boring as my daughter when the studying with through interactive media rather than traditionally taught.

So, web 2.0 is not only a platform just for developer like google, myspace and others. But its a web platform build virtually for everyone. As according to Andy that Web 2.0 is a state of mind which are providing a service, encourage user to contribute and collaborate, make it easy to use, and create community sense belonging.

Wow, now I get it, and I can say that “I know that myspace and facebook are using web 2.0”. And this is also proofs that not only female who likes chat and talk. Male also talk and chat, and sometimes too much. Hah!!!
